Waking up to news of the death of Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, commonly known as Fidel Castro, the Cuban politician and revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008 was met with mixed emotions and sentiments for this young Pan-African writer. It was surprising to see how Africans sincerely mourned the death of this great icon. His relationship with African leaders, activists and the Pan-African-Movement as a whole was special. Young African leaders and countless others appreciate Fidel Castro's contribution in helping Africans get liberty and Independence while at the same time, helping us resist the overwhelming oppression and extortion from foreign governments in the Western world. And while many people may choose to see and believe the bad in late Fidel Castro, we as Africans choose to see a man who stood by our side when others didn't.
