Mark Balet is a contemporary reggae artist based in New York City. Born in April 1983 to military and diplomat parents, he grew up between Ivory Coast, Egypt,  United States, France, England and Spain. In 1996 he formed Mauvaise Race, a Hip-hop & Reggae duo with his sidekick Tashunke and developed his skills through reggae sound systems and open mics.

This Week, We Focus Our Spotlight On Jamaican Singer and Empress, 'Jah9'

As Jah9 release the "year of 9" from the grasp of her fists and greet 2017 (2+0+1+7=1) with open hearts and arms, there are a few blessings that 2016 brought her that she still gives thanks for.  The “year of 9” represented change, which definitely did some resifting in our lives, to make room for the beginning of a new cycle of 9, the “year of 1”, which represents creativity, learning and growth. The highlight and the greatest blessing of 2016, was the birth of the album “9”, which the world received tremendously well. “9” was recently chosen as the no. 2 Reggae Album by Billboard critics and voted no.1 International Reggae Album by Japan's oldest music magazine, JP’s Music. The recent feature in 'The Huffington Post'  is also of great note and acknowledgement to her selfless efforts in inspiring the world with her beautiful melodious music.

Janine "Jah9" Cunningham is a Jamaican reggae vocalist, dub poet, social activist, and yogi. After starting her artistic career in the Jamaican progressive poetry scene, she began to release music in 2009 and has since been "credited as the creator of the 'jazz on dub' genre." Her lyrics cover topics such as social activism, Rastafari, Jamaican culture, culture of the African diaspora, and gender, among many others. After releasing several singles and mixtapes, her debut album New Name was released in 2013. Described by United Reggae as "a straight cultural roots album," it was voted album of the year by AchisReggae.com. In 2013 she began performing on stage with her band The Dub Treatment, and she has since toured the United States and Europe multiple times, performing at events such as the Dour Festival. United Reggae listed her just-released album "9" on VP Records & Steam Chalice Records' one of the "most anticipated reggae albums in 2016. The Pan-African music album by Jah9 titled "9" holds 9-songs and has been themed "The Year of 9" by the mesmerizing songstress herself.
